Fabric is roughly 70 percent of what makes an Arabic tent feel premium or feel cheap. Everything else can be fixed later. The fabric, you live with for a decade. Here is what to ask for and what to skip.
Goat-Hair (Sha'ar) Fabric, the Original
The traditional Bayt Al-Sha'ar fabric is woven from goat or camel hair. It is loose enough to breathe in summer heat, swells with humidity to shed rain, and ages into a soft patina rather than fading flat.
- Best for: heritage projects, royal majlis, hospitality venues that sell authenticity.
- Cost: among the most expensive options. The weaving is slow.
- Lifespan: 12 to 20 years with seasonal care.
- Catch: heavier than synthetic alternatives. Needs a strong frame.
Heavy Cotton Canvas
Tightly woven cotton, usually 400 to 600 GSM, treated for water repellence and UV resistance. The everyday workhorse for serious Arabic tents.
- Best for: villa majlis, family farm setups, mid-range commercial use.
- Cost: mid-range. AED 80 to 200 per square metre depending on grade.
- Lifespan: 8 to 12 years outdoors.
- Catch: needs reproofing every 2 to 3 years.
Polyester and Cotton-Polyester Blends
Lighter, cheaper, and more colour-stable than pure cotton. Common in rental fleets and budget purchases.
- Best for: occasional-use tents, temporary installations.
- Cost: AED 40 to 100 per square metre.
- Lifespan: 4 to 7 years.
- Catch: feels less premium. Loses authenticity for traditional designs.
PVC-Coated Polyester
A polyester base with a PVC coat for full waterproofing and dust resistance. Common for event tents that need to survive a Gulf rainstorm.
- Best for: event hire, hotel pools, anywhere weather sealing matters more than fabric breathing.
- Cost: AED 100 to 250 per square metre.
- Lifespan: 6 to 10 years.
- Catch: traps heat. Not ideal for closed majlis use without good ventilation.
Modern Technical Fabrics (Trevira CS, Sattler, Sunbrella)
Engineered textiles rated for fire safety, UV, water, and colour fastness. Used in higher-end hospitality projects and commercial venues.
- Best for: hotels, restaurants, anywhere a fire certificate is required.
- Cost: premium. AED 200 to 500+ per square metre.
- Lifespan: 10 to 15 years.
- Catch: less traditional look. Suits modern interpretations of Arabic tents.
What to Ask Your Supplier
Before signing the quote:
- GSM (grams per square metre). Higher equals heavier and usually more durable. Anything under 350 GSM is light-duty.
- Fire rating. B1 (German DIN 4102) or M1 (French) for serious projects. Required for hotels and public venues.
- UV rating. Look for UPF 50+ on the data sheet.
- Country of weaving. Italy, Germany, China, India, Türkiye. Provenance affects price and consistency.
- Warranty on the textile itself, separate from workmanship warranty.
What to Avoid
- Suppliers who cannot tell you the GSM.
- "Imported fabric" without a country or brand name.
- Visible loose weave when held against light, unless it is intentional sha'ar.
- Stiff, plasticky polyester that feels like a tarp.
Cost vs Lifespan Reality
A cheap polyester tent that lasts 5 years and costs AED 25,000 works out to AED 5,000 per year. A canvas tent at AED 60,000 lasting 12 years works out to AED 5,000 per year too. Same effective cost, very different experience and resale value.
