Tent and Shade Fabrics UAE: All Types, Grades and Applications

Fabric is the functional core of any shade structure. The steel frame holds it up; the fabric does the actual work — blocking UV, shedding rain, resisting wind, managing heat, and setting the visual tone of the space beneath it. Choosing the wrong fabric for a UAE outdoor application is not a minor inconvenience: it means premature degradation, replacement costs, and months of unusable space.

HDPE Shade Mesh (High-Density Polyethylene)

HDPE mesh is the most widely used shade fabric in the UAE market. It is a knitted or woven polyethylene fabric with an open weave structure that allows airflow while blocking a specified percentage of UV radiation. The shade percentage is measured as the percentage of direct solar radiation blocked.

HDPE mesh is sold by weight in grams per square metre (gsm). Heavier fabric means denser weave, higher UV resistance, and longer service life:

• 120 – 150 gsm: Light-duty. Suitable for temporary or seasonal use, agricultural applications. Lifespan 2 to 4 years outdoors in UAE conditions.
• 180 – 200 gsm: Standard residential. The most common grade for car shades, pergola canopies, and garden shade sails. Lifespan 4 to 7 years.
• 220 – 280 gsm: Heavy-duty. For permanent car shades, commercial structures, and coastal locations with higher wind and salt exposure. Lifespan 7 to 10 years.

HDPE Features for UAE Conditions

Quality HDPE shade fabric for UAE use should carry UV stabilisation that prevents the polymer chains from degrading under intense Gulf sunlight. Look for HDPE with a UV inhibitor rated for at least 5 years of direct UV exposure. Arab Muzalat sources HDPE fabric from certified suppliers with documented UV stabiliser content — not commodity fabric with undisclosed stabiliser levels.

HDPE fabric does not absorb water and dries quickly after rain, making it suitable for poolside and coastal applications. It is also light enough to be handled without mechanical equipment, which simplifies replacement when the time comes.

PVC Canvas (Polyvinyl Chloride Coated Fabric)

PVC canvas is a woven polyester base fabric coated on both sides with a PVC compound. The result is a fully waterproof, tear-resistant material with significantly higher weight and rigidity than HDPE mesh. It is the material used for traditional Arabic tent walls and ceilings, event marquees, truck tarpaulins, and awnings.

• Standard PVC: Smooth surface both sides. Workable in temperatures from -20 to 70 degrees Celsius. Most common finish for Arabic tent fabric.
• Lacquered PVC: Top-coated lacquer layer for improved colour retention and anti-dirt properties. Suited for high-visibility event tents.
• Anti-fungal PVC: Chemical additive prevents mildew growth during storage — critical for UAE tents stored during summer months. Arab Muzalat specifies anti-fungal PVC for all Arabic majlis tent fabric to prevent the black spotting that affects standard PVC during humid storage.
• Fire-retardant PVC: Meets BS 5438 or DIN 4102-B1 fire classification. Required for tents used at government events, exhibitions, and commercial hospitality venues in the UAE.

Acrylic Fabric (Solution-Dyed)

Solution-dyed acrylic fabric — marketed under brand names such as Sunbrella, Dickson, and Sattler — is the premium choice for outdoor upholstery, awning fabric, and outdoor cushion covers. Unlike fabrics where colour is applied after weaving, solution-dyed acrylic has the pigment baked into the fibre itself during manufacture. The colour cannot fade because it is not a surface treatment — it is the fibre.

Why Acrylic for UAE Outdoor Use

The UAE presents two specific challenges that make solution-dyed acrylic the correct choice for outdoor soft furnishings:

• Intense UV radiation: Standard polyester and nylon fabrics lose colour and tensile strength within 1 to 2 seasons of UAE outdoor exposure. Solution-dyed acrylic is rated for 10 years of direct UV exposure without significant colour change.
• Coastal humidity and salt: Acrylic resists salt corrosion and mildew growth without chemical treatment. It can be rinsed with a garden hose and dries completely without retaining moisture in the weave.

Applications: Retractable awning fabric, outdoor sofa and majlis cushion covers, umbrella canopies, sun lounger fabric, marine upholstery.

Price range: AED 85 to 180 per linear metre depending on width and brand.

Polyester Fabric (Coated and Uncoated)

Polyester is the base material of many commercial shade and tent fabrics. In its uncoated form, polyester provides good initial UV resistance but degrades faster than acrylic under prolonged UAE sunlight. Coated polyester — with a PU, silicone, or acrylic coating applied to the surface — significantly extends performance and adds water resistance.

Polyester Variants Used in Shade Structures

• Ripstop polyester: Reinforced with a grid of heavier threads that prevent tears from spreading. Used in sail shade fabric, kite fabric, and event backdrop fabric.
• Oxford polyester (PU coated): Lightweight, water-resistant, used for portable event canopies, pop-up gazebos, and temporary shade panels.
• Satin polyester: Used as ceiling liner fabric inside tents and event venues — drapes cleanly, reflects light, hides structural seams.

Traditional Woven Fabrics (Sadu and Heritage Textiles)

For Arabic heritage tents, royal majlis interiors, and cultural event spaces, traditional woven fabrics provide an authenticity that no synthetic material replicates. Arab Muzalat sources and works with:

• Sadu weave: Traditional Bedouin handwoven fabric using wool or cotton in geometric patterns of red, black, white, and indigo. Used for tent wall panels, decorative hangings, and floor runners in heritage majlis settings.
• Goat hair canvas: The original Bedouin tent material. Heavy, naturally water-resistant, and heat-regulating through evaporative cooling. Used in museum replicas, heritage events, and premium boutique camp constructions.
• Embroidered ceremonial fabric: Silk or heavy cotton base with hand or machine embroidery, used for entrance drapes, throne chair covers, and ceremonial tent panel borders in royal and government reception settings.

Blackout Fabric

Blackout fabric blocks 98 to 100 percent of light transmission. It is used in specific applications where full light exclusion is necessary:

• Outdoor cinema and projection tent screens
• Photography and video production tents
• Privacy screens where full visual opacity is required
• Sleeping tent inner liners for desert camps
• Exhibition booth backdrops

Blackout fabric is typically a triple-layer composite: two polyester face layers with a carbon-black foam layer in the centre. The foam centre also provides some thermal insulation. Weight range: 280 to 420 gsm.

Fabric Replacement: When and How

All outdoor fabric has a finite service life in UAE conditions. Signs that a fabric canopy needs replacement:

• Visible UV chalking or colour bleaching across more than 30 percent of the surface
• Tears or fraying at seams and edge bindings
• Reduced shade percentage — hold the fabric up to daylight; if it looks translucent in patches, the UV stabiliser has depleted
• Mildew staining that does not wash out — the fabric may be structurally intact but aesthetically and hygienically compromised
• Sagging or loss of tension that cannot be corrected by re-tensioning the frame
