A pergola — known locally as an arisha (عريشة) — is the most versatile outdoor structure you can add to a UAE home. Placed over a garden seating area, a pool deck, a side entrance, or a driveway, it transforms open exposed space into a usable outdoor room that works for 7 to 8 months of the year. The remaining summer months become bearable with the addition of a ceiling fan or evaporative cooler underneath.
Arab Muzalat has been designing, fabricating, and installing pergolas across the UAE since 1996. Every project starts with a site visit and ends with a structure that is measured specifically for your property — not adapted from a catalogue.
Types of Home Pergola We Build
Motorised Louvred Aluminium Pergola
The louvred pergola uses adjustable aluminium slats that rotate from fully open to fully closed via a remote control or wall switch. Open position: natural ventilation and filtered light. Closed position: full shade and protection from light rain. An optional LED strip integrated into each louvre blade gives evening ambience without separate light fixtures.
This is the most requested pergola type for UAE villa gardens and pool areas in the AED 15,000 to 45,000 range. The aluminium frame is powder-coated in any RAL colour — white, anthracite, bronze, champagne, and custom shades are all available. Maintenance requirement is minimal: annual lubrication of the blade pivot mechanism and a wipe-down of the frame.
Typical sizes: 3 x 4 m to 6 x 10 m as a single span. Multiple spans can be joined for larger areas.
Price range (supply and install): AED 1,800 to 2,800 per square metre depending on span width and motor quality.
Fixed Aluminium Pergola
A fixed aluminium pergola uses a static roof — either solid aluminium panels, polycarbonate sheets, or stretched fabric — on a powder-coated aluminium frame. It provides permanent shade at a lower price point than the louvred version, with no moving parts to maintain.
The solid aluminium panel roof option gives a clean architectural finish that suits contemporary villa aesthetics. The polycarbonate option allows diffused natural light through while blocking UV. The fabric option works well for shaded dining areas where some breeze is wanted.
Price range: AED 900 to 1,600 per square metre depending on roof type and span.
Wooden Arisha (Traditional Pergola)
The traditional Arabic arisha uses hardwood beams — typically pressure-treated pine, teak, or iroko — arranged in an open lattice pattern overhead. Climbing plants, shade cloth, or woven reed panels are trained over the lattice to build up the shade cover over time or provide immediate cover from day one.
A wooden arisha suits heritage-style villas, farmhouses (مزارع), and gardens where the client wants a living structure that improves with age rather than a rigid manufactured finish. It is also the most cost-effective pergola option at entry level.
Maintenance note: Solid wood in the UAE requires annual oiling or staining to prevent moisture damage and cracking. WPC (wood-plastic composite) is available as a zero-maintenance alternative that maintains the same visual appearance.
Price range: AED 600 to 1,200 per square metre for solid wood. AED 900 to 1,500 per square metre for WPC.
WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) Pergola
WPC boards and beams look like wood and cut like wood, but they do not rot, crack, or require periodic re-staining. In the UAE climate — with its combination of intense UV, seasonal humidity, and coastal salt air — WPC outperforms solid wood in longevity. A WPC arisha installed today should look the same in 15 years with nothing more than an occasional wash.
WPC is available in natural wood-grain finishes: teak, walnut, cedar, and grey-washed. Arab Muzalat uses hollow-profile WPC boards rated for outdoor use in temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius.
Steel Pergola with Shade Sail or Fabric Roof
A galvanised or powder-coated steel frame supports either a tensile fabric canopy, HDPE shade sail, or polycarbonate roof. This is the most economical pergola structure for large spans — particularly useful for covering a full driveway width of 8 to 12 metres where aluminium spanning would require costly intermediate supports.
Price range: AED 500 to 900 per square metre including fabric roof.
Pergola Placement: Where It Makes the Biggest Difference
Garden Seating Area
The most common pergola application in UAE homes. A 4 x 5 m louvred or fixed pergola over an outdoor dining set gives you a usable outdoor room from October through April and a shaded space that is tolerable even in summer evenings with a ceiling fan running.
Pool Deck and Pool Surrounds
A pergola over part of the pool deck — typically the lounge chair area — creates a shaded retreat that makes the pool usable during midday hours. Waterproof lighting integration and stainless steel fixings are standard for pool-adjacent structures.
Side Entrance and Walkway
A narrow pergola (1.2 to 1.8 m wide) over a garden path or side entrance covers the transition from car park to front door. This is where fabric pergolas and simple wooden arisha structures offer strong value relative to cost.
Front Driveway and Car Shade Combined
A wider pergola (3.5 to 4 m wide) spanning the driveway serves as both a car shade structure and an architectural entrance feature. When designed to match the villa exterior — colour, material, and roofline proportion — it lifts the kerb appeal of the whole property significantly.
Rooftop and Terrace
Apartment and villa rooftop terraces benefit from freestanding pergola structures that do not require wall attachment. These use base-plate footings anchored to the existing concrete slab. Load calculations are required to confirm the slab capacity — Arab Muzalat provides structural drawings for permit purposes.

Permit requirements vary by emirate and structure type. The general position in 2025:
- Dubai (DM): Pergolas attached to a villa require a No Objection Certificate. Freestanding pergolas under 30 sqm in a private garden generally do not require a permit, subject to setback rules (1 m from boundary).
- Abu Dhabi (DCA/DMT): Any permanent structure over 10 sqm requires a permit. Attached pergolas require a structural NOC regardless of size.
- Sharjah: Similar to Dubai — attached structures require approval, small freestanding structures in private gardens are generally exempt.
- Ajman, RAK, Fujairah: Municipal approval required for permanent structures over 20 sqm. Process is simpler and faster than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Arab Muzalat prepares structural drawings and assists with permit submission for all projects that require municipality approval. This is included as part of the project scope — there is no separate fee for documentation preparation.
Design Process: From Site Visit to Completion
- Site visit and measurement — We visit your property, measure the space, check wall condition (for attached pergolas), and photograph the area. No commitment required at this stage.
- Design proposal — We provide a sketch layout, material recommendation, colour options, and itemised quote within 3 to 5 working days.
- Permit application (if required) — We prepare and submit drawings to the relevant municipality. Timeline varies: 5 to 15 working days in most emirates.
- Fabrication — Aluminium frames are cut and welded in our workshop. Timber is treated and pre-cut. Lead time: 7 to 14 days from order confirmation.
- Installation — Our crew installs the pergola in 1 to 3 days depending on size and complexity. Site is cleared on completion.
