The Point at Which Buying a Tent Beats Renting Every Time

Most event companies in the UAE start by renting tents. It makes sense for a business that is still figuring out which tent configurations it needs most. But after 12–18 months of renting, the calculation changes. If your business uses a 10 × 10 m event marquee eight or more times a year, you have almost certainly already paid for the tent in rental fees and you own nothing. This article is for buyers who are ready to move from renting to owning.

The Break-Even Calculation

A commercial-grade 10 × 10 m event marquee (aluminium frame, 650 GSM PVC, fire-certified) costs approximately AED 14,000–20,000 to buy from Arab Muzalat, installed. The same tent rents for AED 2,000–3,500 per event in Dubai (excluding installation labour, which typically adds AED 800–1,500 per setup).

At AED 2,500 rental + AED 1,000 installation per use, the total cost per event is AED 3,500. An owned tent at AED 17,000 breaks even at approximately five uses. From use six onwards, the owned tent costs only labour (setup and pack-down) — typically AED 600–900 with your own crew, or AED 1,200–1,800 with an outsourced team.

For a business running 12 events per year, the annual savings after the break-even point are AED 25,000–30,000 compared to renting.

What Separates an Event Tent Worth Buying from One That Isn't

Not every tent sold in the UAE is worth buying for repeated commercial use. The specifications that determine whether a tent earns its purchase price:

Durability ratings:

  • Fire certification: UAE civil defence requires fire-retardant fabric for any tent used at a public event or on licensed commercial premises. The certification must name the specific fabric product, not just state "flame retardant." Ask for the test certificate.
  • Wind rating: a commercial event tent should be rated to withstand UAE coastal wind loads — typically 80–100 km/h sustained wind. Cheaper tents are rated to 40–50 km/h, which is insufficient for coastal Dubai event venues.
  • Seam integrity: heat-welded PVC seams for waterproofing. Stitched seams on PVC leak at the needle holes within a season of repeated setup and takedown.

Repairability and parts availability:

  • Can individual fabric panels be replaced without retiring the entire tent?
  • Are aluminium frame connectors available as individual parts, or must a damaged section be replaced as a whole assembly?
  • Can the frame be repaired in the field with standard tools, or does it require specialist equipment?

Pack-down efficiency:

  • How many person-hours does setup and pack-down require? For a 10 × 10 m frame tent, a trained 3-person crew should achieve setup in 2.5–3 hours and pack-down in 2 hours. Tents requiring more time than this reduce the number of events you can run in a day and increase your labour cost per event.
  • Packed dimensions and weight: a 10 × 10 m tent that packs into two bags fitting a standard pickup truck is manageable. One that requires a dedicated box truck limits your event geography.

Types of Event Tents Worth Buying in the UAE

  • Frame marquees (aluminium extrusion frame + PVC panels): The most widely used commercial event tent in the UAE. Modular, expandable, fully fire-certifiable. Best for event companies running a high volume of varied-size events.
  • Stretch tents (PVC membrane on minimal pole points): A design-forward option for premium events. Higher cost per square metre than frame marquees but creates a distinctive aesthetic. Works well for branded corporate events and upscale weddings.
  • Traditional Bedouin tents (beit al-sha'ar / Arabic tent): The right tent for cultural events, heritage festivals, and any event where authenticity is part of the value proposition. Cannot be replicated by a synthetic marquee.
  • Geodesic dome tents: Suitable for branded activations, product launches, and immersive experiences. Higher cost and specialist setup, but delivers unique visual impact.

Buying a Fleet: Starting with the Right First Purchase

For event companies building an owned tent fleet, the recommended starting point is two or three units of your most commonly requested size — typically 10 × 10 m in the UAE event market. This gives you the volume to handle back-to-back events, one tent as backup if another needs repair, and enough repetitions to train your setup crew efficiently. Add additional sizes only once the core units are profitable.
